1. The tweet is horrible. Period. I told him that. He already knew it, of course. It would not have been wrong to say that he's glad to see the legislation get closer to becoming a reality, but to me, and others, calling Donald Trump the "uniter-in-chief" is very disturbing.

2. I work with hundreds of families of incarcerated men & women. I get 5-10 letters a day from people who are locked up and desperately need help. We don't have the luxury of telling them to wait until a Democrat or progressive is elected. Even that might not work.

3. When I saw Van starting to work with Trump & Kushner & others to get criminal justice reform passed, I called him months ago, and told him I just couldn't do it, but agreed that somebody needed to do it, because the reforms truly cannot wait. For many it is truly life & death.

4. Half of our states have Republican governors & Senators & Attorney Generals. Many of us who do criminal justice work in those states are forced to sometimes meet & work with people that we don't like to fight for the people we love. It's genuinely hard.

5. I said all of that to say that while I am grateful for people who are willing and able to walk into compromised spaces w/ genuinely evil people to negotiate on behalf of the oppressed, they must do so knowing they are playing with snakes and vipers. Trump is a not a uniter.

6. In the end, I won't be throwing
@VanJones68 away. I regret his words, and believe they were problematic. He made a mistake. Ultimately, I will use my energy to get back into the fight for serious criminal justice reforms. I'd give this new bill a C-/D+. It needs real work.Show this thread

STOP PRAISING FOLKS FOR ACKNOWLEDGING THE DAMN KNIFE THEY STUCK IN OUR BACKS! Trump/Session policy has set back criminal justice reform 3 decades and now they are searching for votes by simply talking reform with no demonstrated results.pic.twitter.com/qhZmyhaDph

Prison is a for profit business. If they are shortening prison terms does that mean they will arrest more people in order to keep them filled? Are they going to stop building more prisons? Remember they need someone to fill those beds.

It would be great...but, Trump always manages to do something to undo the good he tried to look like he was doing. Waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Right, like trump is going to do anything to help black people other than talking about it. McConnell has already said it isn’t making it to the floor this legislative session. I’ll believe it when it happens.

I’ve seen too many pics of Van raising a glass in celebration with those he decries for entertainment purposes on the news. Blocked him long ago. The media are in their heyday under trump. Some are amassing fortunes, some fame but all are playing his game.

Read the bill and tell me where it will reduce mass incarceration right now. It does not address, marijuana bond reform, police brutality, those things shamed on a federal level automatically effects state law. It does address heroin, opioids which bypasses cocaine and crack.
