The white guy in our group - his family came through Ellis Island. They had to have a location they were traveling to, a job waiting for them, and a reason for coming here in the first place. Also, they weren't well liked...like most immigrants in this country.

There was a time "Americans" were against the Irish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Jewish... you name it, there was a time when all took turns as the undesirable. Now it's simply non-white ethnic groups.

Why are they refusing asylum in Mexico?

Some have. Others are fleeing dangers that could still easily reach them in Mexico. Still others have family in the US and need that support system to help them re-establish their lives in a new place. Individual reasons vary.
