The very following line says "but he wishes it wasn't so". Meaning he his acknowledging that the US society is still biased against non white male candidates and it might take another white male to defeat Trump in today's politics. But that he wishes it wasn't so.

I'm no fan of Avenatti and I think he's dead wrong. It doesn't take a white male to deliver our message, he's so out of touch that it's comical. I don't think his comments came from a bigoted standpoint, they just came from ignorance and there is a key distinction there.

Exactly. Obama got six million votes more than any white man who has ever been a presidential nominee. 10 years ago! Hillary Clinton got three million more. In this moment, based on numbers, the better argument is that it will likely take someone who is not a white male.
