I’ve been a journalist for 20 years. For most of those years when I told people what I do they’d say “oh interesting” or maybe “I write too” or offer a story idea. Now it’s either “I hope you’re not a political journalist at least” (right) or “that seems like a scary job” (left)

I’ve never worried about answering the question “what do you do?” But now have to do a quick safety calculation first. That’s new in the last two years.

The worst thing about being a septuagenarian in 2018 is to know I may not live to see our country recover from the incalculable moral and material damage we've done to ourselves and the world.

They used exact same sign in Farsi in 1980 purge and closing of all newspapers by Ayatollah. All criminal regimes attack journalists. All regimes who attack journalists do it to cover up their crimes

Yep, it’s always been there, but people are feeling emboldened again. It’s scary seeing how much hate is being put out & even encouraged by the president & his followers.
