My 15 yo son is interracial and I've been thinking I need to have "the talk" with him. Im white. Any suggestions?

My mom had the talk with me, she's white, I'm interracial. She pointed out some of the differences in how she gets approached by police vs how I'd get approached. That I'm more likely to be pulled over & the police are more likely to approach as if I'm a threat.
-
That I need to be very aware of body language & need to read the situation quickly. That I need to expect aggression & be the level headed "adult" when it happens. First & foremost it's not me & never take it personally.
-
IF there's a problem get their name & badge number and handle it later, never EVER challenge an armed hot head. Only things you should ever say are: Yes, sir(ma'am) No, sir(ma'am) I'd like an attorney.
-
It's basically a talk about how to act if you're ever held up or robbed at gunpoint point, but with police. No sudden moves. Give them what they want. Don't panic. Don't raise your voice. Don't confront them. Remember as many details as you can, file a police report afterwards.

Exactly!!! My children’s book covers all of these!! Was featured in Essence. I teach kids 5 things to memorize if approached by police

Oh, that's great! With law enforcement on both sides of my family, they always stressed that just cos they're cops it doesn't mean they're good people. It's hard to teach kids that they're both good & a potential threat. You don't wanna scare 'em, but they need to be prepared.

We had to tell our 7 year old that he couldn’t play with his friends outside, while they were playing with toy air rifles. They were pretending to shoot each other. That’s when we chose to have the conversation with him. It was hard.
-
That's heartbreaking... Im sorry you had to have to talk AT ALL let alone with your 7 year old!! Sending some love your way

-
It was a while back, but it was just so odd to have to tell him that if he ran outside with an air rifle, it might not look the same as his white friends running with the air rifle. It's sad because all he knew was that he wanted to play.
-
I can only imagine your fear and his confusion. Your wanting to protect him and his wanting to be just like his friends. Your knowing society and police may not see him as a small child & him just wanting to be a child. I pray a generation I get see won't have to have "the talk"

Had it with my boys...8 and 15...

Got it at 9 or 10. Had to use it at 12. Life saving info. Cop aimed his gun at me..in our house...after we called when someone broke in our home on Easter morning. True story. I couldn’t move or talk to tell him I called.

So sorry this happened to you. Are you recovered?

Yeah, it is a story that I rarely have shared and was reluctant to do so via this medium. But glad I did. Reminder of what so many didn’t walk away from. Thank you for checking on me.

Sincerely.

Can’t wait to see this- I know it’s gonna be heartbreaking. Such a movie of our times, sadly. We must change this horrific trend.
-
The Talk has been around since the end of slavery, just changing for the times. I had the talk with my sons in the 90s and 2000’s.
-
I’m sorry. No one should have to live their lives like this. I worry too for my niece and nephew. But it goes beyond family. I worry for others and my heart breaks for the injustice. I hope to be part of the change for better futures.

How heartbreaking and scary it must be to have to give your children this "talk". 2018, and racism is still pervasive. I see the faces of these children and feel so sad for them and also, angry that they have to endure this reality.
