I would agree if he was benefiting from it but he's long dead so I'm not going to spend time on it.
Then disavow the Bill of Rights, the framers of our constitution were slave owners too. You cannot hold people of the past to the morals of today. It does not work that way.
It is one thing to “not know better.” But the truth is that LOTS of people knew better and said so. And so now I wonder, who pushed this song to become the National Anthem? Who ignored (or embraced) his (lacking) character to say, “this is the guy whose words matter”?

Finally someone mentions this! Now don't get me started on effing patriotism.
This also kills the ideology and history that one group of people deserves specialness so everyone else has to sing their anthems, worship their beliefs and values, even when these ideas are biased, prejudice and immoral just because they feel superior to everyone else.
