The question is this: How horrible does someone's character have to be before you no longer cherish their art? I have a line. Owning human beings cross that line. Francis Scott Key not only owned them, he lived a truly atrocious & abusive life.https://theintercept.com/2018/09/13/national-anthem-meaning-colin-kaepernick/ …

Ask yourself this question. If a Nazi wrote a great song, would you overlook his Naziism because you loved the song? What if a 9/11 hijacker was also a great photographer, would you buy a book of his wonderful photos? That's Francis Scott Key to me.https://theintercept.com/2018/09/13/national-anthem-meaning-colin-kaepernick/ …

Not only did Francis Scott Key own dozens of human beings, his family owned hundreds. They built their wealth that way. And as District Attorney of DC, Key fought against abolitionists tooth and nail his entire life.https://theintercept.com/2018/09/13/national-anthem-meaning-colin-kaepernick/ …

When it comes to early American figures, modern (white) Americans want us to do the opposite of what Dr. King dreamed. They want us to actually ignore the "content of their character." Francis Scott Key was a MONSTER.https://theintercept.com/2018/09/13/national-anthem-meaning-colin-kaepernick/ …

I think most white people have a line that can be crossed in which they'll no longer enjoy the art of a person if they do A, B, or C. It just seems that owning & abusing & breeding & trading & selling Africans - then making their life a living hell for a living doesn't cross it

Two things I’m in favor of...our anthem should be America the Beautiful and our motto should go back to E Pluribus Unum

I grew up in the town where FSK is buried, where the mall is named after him, where I lived 1 block away from his grave. I fully agree with you on this. I hate how we hold up these men to be so honorable, when they were in fact not good people.

Yep. Unfortunately, the truthful history behind the national anthem is rarely discussed. It is time for that to change. The information was floating around several years ago, but never made it to mainstream media.

This all came up recently. I don’t understand why people don’t want to face the ugliness of our country’s history.

I’ve been protesting the racist anthem since I was 8 years old and learned all of the lyrics. It’s a FOUL song!

Know anyone interested in writing NEW anthemic lyrics to a 100-year-old George Gershwin anthem that never caught on due to so-so lyrics? Trying to give America, and Gershwin, a song we can all be proud of. Please share this; 2 months to submit. Thanks!pic.twitter.com/EhyDa3jGgM

My friend, the historian Peter Linebaugh, talks about this history quite often....it is odd that this is rarely discussed when this issue comes up. Some scary stuff we don't sing in that song.
