Generalization: From what I've seen, Americans don't value the arts. They WANT the arts, the DESIRE the arts, but they don't VALUE them. And by value, I mean they aren't willing to trade their own work (i.e., money earned) for the artist's work, creativity, and expenses.

Of course, there are exceptions, but Napster happened for a reason. Musicians are expected to play for "exposure" instead of pay, artists are looked down on until they are "discovered," every college student majoring in the arts is advised to get a "back-up" degree.

Americans tell artists: you shouldn't expect to get paid for doing what you like. I saw someone say in a forum once that writers shouldn't be paid because "everyone learns how to write." People in the arts may be admired, but are they valued? Not as much as sports figures are.
