The merchandising of black pain that we managed to turn into artistic expression is as American as apple pie. The Blues was the cry of the unfulfilled American dream for the southern negro. Hip Hop is that same cry, 75 years later from urban black America. They are the same.

There’s a difference between getting to know a culture and what he’s referring to. For example, black women are considered ghetto and unkempt when they wear cornrows yet when white women wear them they’re fashionable and beautiful. They appreciate the culture but not us.

That still doesn’t change the fact that black people face discrimination for the same cultural aspects that are seen positively on white people. And that’s what Shaun is talking about.

It’s kind of hard to open yourself and your culture up to people who throughout history have sought your demise. And continue to do so using every oppressive tool available against you.
