God have mercy on us.... Our country is built on blood and suffering... I walk humbly and often pray for forgiveness for all that has been done by those before us because it still bears painful fruit for some, and ease and affluence for others. We must acknowledge this.

All nations are built on blood and suffering. The real horror, is continuing to commit these atrocities today.

America is not the only place harming kids, so let's just move on past that now, right? No? Okay, so don't minimize America's bloody past either. Maybe think about how what you just said/did minimizes atrocity. Minimizing is what allows horrors to continue in all nations today.

Nice reminder about the real nuts and bolts of the 13th Amendment. Slavery was, and still is, legal after the Civil War. It's also still very much a race-based system, obviously.

Texas was were slave holders hid their slaves, during the signing of the emancipation proclamation and civil war; they enforced the 13th amendment to keep black people slaves by mass incarceration. It's never been a figment of POC imaginations.

This is the shame. This is what people must acknowledge and correct. It is happening today in so many ways. We must listen and heal what is broken.

And we'll continue enslaving prisoners until we stop privatizing prisons. No, that's not true. I don't know when we'll stop.

And this is why Texas shouldn’t have tried to changed their high school history textbooks in 2015 to minimize slavery. It is still stuck in modernity and needs to be in open discussion.

Tthey were rented out as part of the "prisoner for lease" program. Remember the 13th Amendment? False imprisonment isn't new, southern states immediately took advantage of the prison clause.

To this day convicts in US prisons can legally be enslaved. Slave emancipation act/13th amendment did not apply to convicted people serving sentences
