Nope, I did this. Too risky, focus on killing GPA & don't make it harder for yourself. I learned the hard way by putting too much on my plate.

I agree. That GPA is more important. Take the AP English only.

I'd advise taking the AP English, not lit/comp, if she's only taking one. In my experience the English course is more likely to count for something at college. She can also take the Lit/Comp test without taking the course.
-
I agree AP English over Lit. Also, look at AP Math &/or Science courses. She can knock out a few college credits while still in high school. Good luck.

-
AP English for sure. My niece is a junior and is in the accelerated program. She will have classes for an Associates degree by the time she graduates! She's also in Upward Bound summer program (second year). She is so smart, can't wait to see everything she can accomplish!

Awesome job Mom.

If she is aiming for elite colleges they want to see as rigorous schedule as possible. Take one of the English APs and the other slot should be for another AP in a different area. Save the other English AP for senior year.
-
Don't look at APs as a way of getting college credit. Look at this as a way to proving to admissions officers that she can handle a difficult workload.

I took both over the course of two years, and wouldn't recommend taking more than one at once. The AP English Course with Composition ended up being the most useful for me as a writer generally and as a writer of college admissions essays.
-
seconded. I’d recommend AP Lang & Comp over AP Lit & Comp. Lang definitely did more to strengthen rhetorical skills and writing than Lit did.

What else is on her schedule? Benefit to taking both is likely separate course credit for freshman year of college. But that's a *lot* of reading+writing in one year plus 2 writing-heavy AP exams (typical set up is 1 jr yr and the other sr yr)
-
She gonna be reading 24/7 and writing on the other days
-
Better tell her to have fun now, just take one course.

I would advise contacting the college she may be interested in to confirm she would be given credit for the course work the The AP English would be better if she really loves Lit. she can consider taking CLEP exams. She can get college credit for less than 150 in most cases
-
Yup, CLEP'd out of several courses myself, but took a ton of AP classes too

-
I administer CLEP exams on the College Campus that I work for. Many AP credits are not accepted but CLEP is. Congrats on passing the CLEP's that is not an easy test!
-
Thanks, that was, oh 20 years & 3 degrees ago
