To me, that’s what it means to be “woke.” To understand that the American Dream is just that, and the the American Reality has always disenfranchised, oppressed, and killed many.

Thank you! I hate when people say, "This is not who we are." It may not be who you are as an individual, but it is exactly who "we" are. Look in the mirror, America.
-
I think what people mean to say is, "This is not who we SAY we are." America SAYS it's a nation that values diversity, equality, and hard work, but then turns around and encourages rich, old, and regressive white men to trample all over everyone else.
-
Maybe, but when I hear it, it's usually someone saying Not Me!
-
I think perhaps it’s often people saying “This is not who we WANT to be; this is not how we PERCEIVED ourselves.” And I think they mean well? But it must be followed up with action.

It’s hardly exclusive to USA

-
Your right it’s not exclusive, but shouldn’t the country we live in actually live up to its core beliefs? From your profile pic u look old enough to know these are facts being spoken.

Exactly. In many ways Trump is the most American president possible. Which is the problem

Yes, we do. It's a function of our privilege that we didn't know (or acknowledge) it until now. America never was what it wanted to be. No, that's not right. It might have been exactly what it wanted to be. America never was what it could be. I will work to make that happen.

They don't have to be. Yes, they have existed since the inception of our country but there has always been that strain of our character that has longed for ideals greater than the current reality. That is our most American character. We believe we can be better and we can be

Maybe it's just me, but I've been hearing this for far too long. Talk, is just talk. Everyone has bias, it's just a matter of, what's your poison. We'll have more time to discuss this, when we're lined up and caged.

At this point you can fit an entire solar system between what America aspires to be and what it actually is

As a Brit living here for 14 years, and coming from a different culture, i’ve somewhat impartially witnessed this happen...and it’s absolutely true. It’s as American as can be
