Seeing something rather painful as I study voting results in several California counties tonight. Nearly 100% of Republicans will vote for the conservative DA & Sheriff. But so will half of Democrats - especially white moderates. Ending mass incarceration doesn’t motivate them

They are constantly fed lies by police “public relations officers”, who are paid with our tax money and go around to more affluent areas and mislead them with phony stats, trying to correlate progressive (proven) policies with higher crime.
They are addicted to incarceration and continue to want to fight a culture war through policing, even when the public has rejected their way.
Even in CA, where to people voted to legalize marijuana, conservative law enforcement tries to subvert the will of the people because they just don’t like it. I see it all the time as a Public Defender here in LA. They also love to criminalize poverty.
Always thought the term 'moderate' was a misnomer. Anyone who votes to maintain the status quo, irrespective of how injust it may be is an extreme conservative ideologue not a 'moderate' or a 'centrist'.
Moderate in this context is another word for conservative, i.e. doesn't want things to change.
Yes exactly, the problem is that the status quo may not be moderate at all, it's a euphemism. In the UK, for example, so-called moderates tend to be pro-war, pro-austerity and pro-big business, all of which, objectively, might be viewed as extreme.
Quite the same with "moderate" Democrats today. Their policies are where moderate Republicans were 30 years ago. The current R's are right wing nationalists.

White centrists and white supremacists share a common cause: maintaining the status quo. The only thing that separates them is that centrists delude themselves into believing themselves "liberal".
Many white moderates don't care because mass incarceration will never apply to them. Same with police brutality and racial injustice. They won't care.
