15 year old Dayonn Davis, an honors student, stole a pair of Jordans. They tried him as an adult and sentenced him to 5 years in adult prison + 10 years of probation. This is the New Jim Crow.http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/news/local/article212275254.html …

Did I read the article wrong? Let me try again I read it late last night.

"Davis’ companion then pulled out a pistol, and everyone ran. But Columbus police quickly tracked Davis down, and found the stolen shoes in his closet."

Then the problem is mandatory sentences. Cases should be at the discretion of the judge as every case is different. Perhaps at such a young age, rehabilitation is the answer.

If you look at the data, mandatory sentencing has done real damage to communities. And it’s only been around since the Clinton era. Even the people who originally implemented it have admitted it was a mistake.
-
It's around since WHO's era? Thank you for saying it like it is. Mandatory sentencing creates cookiecutter laws that don't take any individuality or special circumstances into consideration. They are wrong on so many levels.
-
After doing more research earliest mentions of mandatory sentencing goes back to the 50’s but it was the Clinton administration that took it to the level it is today

Yeah I see. Eh. Not a good outcome, the punishment doesn't fit the crime. I would have been scared out of my life regardless.

He and his friend committed armed robbery. Armed robbery carries a minimum 5 years. Don't commit gun crimes if you don't want the sentence.

He either planned an armed robbery, or (if you believe the "I had no idea he would pull a gun" crap) he planned a strong-arm robbery. That should mean jail time, but I'll give you that five years is excessive.
