Something genuinely strange has happened. Woke up today to emails and tweets saying I am anti-Semitic. Which is weird, because I've been publicly & privately fighting against this bigotry for years. Here's the argument...
-
-
I reject every single anti-Semitic word, phrase, thought, dream, notion, or consideration from every single human being, including Louis Farrakhan, that has ever had such a thought. I loathe anti-Semitism. I hunt neo-Nazis as a hobby. Hoped my actions & heart were clear.

What's particularly weird about this new attack, calling me anti-Semitic, is that it is not based on anything new, but based on something that had already been settled months ago. The only thing new is that I am strong speaking out for the human rights of Palestinians & for BDS.

Here's the deal. I'm going to keep standing up for the human rights of Palestinians. And I'm going to keep hunting down and exposing Neo-Nazis. And you can love me or hate me - that's your choice - but I will let my actions speak for themselves every single day.

I have never met Louis Farrakhan. I am not responsible for anything he says or does. I am also not responsible for other people who may respect or admire him. If that issue is critical for you, and that's your business, you will have to take that up with them.

I fundamentally reject the notion that fighting for the human rights and dignity of Palestinians makes anyone anti-Semitic. If you believe that, it's no different than people thinking those who hate police brutality hate white people.

Someone said, "Shaun - you can't tell us what is or is not anti-Semitic." OK. Defining your oppression for yourself is your privilege. But if me not rejecting a person who did not reject a person who you say is anti-Semitic makes me anti-Semitic, then we do have a problem.

Again - I will keep fighting against all bigotry of all kinds. I don't do it for the love or any accolades - Lord knows it puts me and my whole family in danger every day - I do it because it's the right thing to do and it must be done. //End of Thread

Shaun, this is not what anyone is saying - are you listening??
-
I'm so confused
-
It's gaslighting. It's infuriating.
-
And it's a misrepresentation of their kind and generous requests
-
Well what the heck, that's upsetting! Shaun is usually so on point

I don't see accusations that you personally are anti-Semitic, just that you're disregarding the opinions of those who experience antisemitism firsthand. Maybe don't block Jewish journalists, though?https://twitter.com/Yair_Rosenberg/status/1002206599069491200 …

What you're effectively saying is "I'm disassociated enough with this person that I shouldn't have to denounce him." Denouncing him would take all of thirty seconds. Are you really too busy to do that?
-
And if you don't denounce him when asked to, do you not effectively give legitimacy to his words? After all, as Eli Wiesel said: "We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented."
