not saying someone has no right to vent about a situation just because 1000 other people beat them to it. but before they also tag the person in question, they should consider what they're trying to do. if it's anything other than 'punish that person further,' it's been done

And if that torrent of criticism only came about after repeatedly making the *same* mistakes over and over again and consistently refusing to acknowledge or apologize for those mistakes or how they negatively affect more marginalized people?
-
What if constructive criticism was tried repeatedly and the person who made the "mistake" only ever claims THEY are the real victim, and then makes a 1hr 40min video which basically amounts to "Poor me!"

doesnt help when your (initial) response to criticism is to double down and call the people who have a problem with you misguided

I think we can logically understand that an initial response is less informed and thought out, and that time might be needed to learn and grow?

Yes, that is understandable, however, what does that mean about any individual person's right to criticize someone? E.g., I believe person X did a bad thing, but I know loads of folk have already said the same. Am I obligated to not express that opinion?

For me, when I see someone is already getting a lot of legitimate criticism online, I don't see the point in my adding to it. So I just share my criticism with friends, either off the platform or without tagging them. It's not like said person would ever see what I wrote anyway.

Assuming everyone you interact with has humanity that is not attached to an opinion they hold or action they did is a great start when it comes to online harassment. First recognize that this person is human and then proceed how you see fit.

Having a “Wrong Opinion ™” about Star Wars does not negate someone’s humanity. Continuing to learn about and comprehend one’s gender identity and identities that vary from yours and having bumps along the way does not negate someone’s humanity.

Blown away at the amount of "Abuse is bad, BUT" replies here. People are seriously that unaware, aren't they. I guess they never lived through GG or something.
