  2. If I were the 1,200th person thinking about submitting an application and knew ahead of time that there were 1,199 people who'd already done so, I likely wouldn't waste my time, even if it seemed that I met all the qualifications.

  3. If you get 1,200+ applicants for a single position, you're doing it wrong. You've just wasted SO many people's time. Be more frank about qualifications (to deter unqualified people) and about demand (to save the time of qualified candidates for whom it's still a long shot).

I got a promotional email from a site that sells discounted gift cards. The email announced that they are having a big Super Bowl sale. First thought was, "Oh man, the NFL is going to come after them for not calling it the Big Game."

This pic shows that "Experimenting With Kids" is about 20% thicker than "Experimenting With Babies." Mostly because as your child gets older, you can perform more complex experiments! Not pictured: "Experiments for Newlyweds," whose thickness falls in the middle.

Woohoo! My publisher just sent me the bound galleys for my book "Experimenting With Kids," which hits bookstores in May. Shown here with its precursor, "Experimenting With Babies." Together, they give you 100 science projects you can perform on your kid in the first six years!

Don’t forget, you need to do all this while you are unconscious in the ER, or you could be royally screwed.

My latest Psychology Today post is about a study released last month that tracked newlyweds' sex lives over 4 years. It found differences in sex frequency and satisfaction depending on how long the couple dated and if they lived together before marriage.

Whoa, Isaac Asimov without his signature mutton chops looks like heavy Tom Hanks.

I can't believe it's taken me this long to figure out that you can do this with a bookmark. As soon as I realized it, I whipped up this design and printed it out! Same bookmark in both photos, just flipped upside down in the second shot.

I'm not sure how much of the algebra will stick, but I'm pleased that what could have been a "No, you're doing it wrong, use subtraction not addition" moment turned into a more positive discussion where he felt like I was letting him in on some advanced-level math secrets. :)

We talked about how he was thinking of the problem as an algebraic expression, and about how you can always turn an expression of the form "a + b = c" into "c - a = b" or "c - b = a" to get the unknown value on one side. From there, he was able to subtract to get the answer.

He was very surprised when I complimented him on using algebra. "Algebra?!?" he said. "I'm doing algebra?!?" "You certainly are!" I said.

I asked him what math operation he was going to use to determine the answer, expecting him to say subtraction. But he insisted that he needed to use addition. In his head, the problem was not this: 5,000 - 3,600 = x But rather this: 3,600 + x = 5,000

Here's a little story about a math problem that seemed like it was going badly. Our son was frustrated with a word problem. He knew there was 5000g of food total and 3600g accounted for. His job was to determine what was unaccounted for.

Once a flight attendant gave this gleeful, adorable happy birthday speech and explained how it’s an extra special birthday because it’s someone’s 90th birthday and also their first time flying. “Everyone say happy birthday to your pilot!”

By far the least realistic part about the Mr. Rogers movie is how the journalist is assigned to write 400 words and he turns in ... 10,000 and the editor is like ... I love it we’re going to make it the cover.
