KC Council is claiming this is a temporary “solution.” But even before the vote, the Executive has already shared their eagerness to expand, saying they want to relocate more than 60 people a day and then further increase the County’s reliance on SCORE.
No Transfers. No Stealth Expansion. Shutdown and Decarcerate. The proposed ordinance states: “The Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention anticipates housing an average daily population of approximately 50 people at SCORE for an estimated biennial cost of $3.5 million.” KC Council is claiming this is a temporary “solution.” But even before the vote, the Executive has already shared their eagerness to expand, saying they want to relocate more than 60 people a day and then further increase the County’s reliance on SCORE. The SCORE contract would expand incarceration and cage more people in a jail we know is unsafe. This contract is not the temporary “solution” Council is claiming – it’s the beginning of yet another deadly carceral expansion. # No Stealth Jail Expansion. A small image at the bottom depicts the jail transport bus with a red X over it.

After two weeks of public outcry against the proposal to outsource the misery at the King County Jail to the deadly SCORE jail, KC Council has delayed the vote *yet again*. THIS Tuesday, the Council will consider the proposal with what they hope will be less public attention. 🧵
Bright yellow headline reads: The King County Council is trying to expand incarceration with another deadly jail contract. Red dollar signs are scattered in between words in the headline. Below is a photo collage of King County Council members in business formal wear labeled with their names: Pete von Reichbauer, Reagan Dunn, Rod Dembowski, Girmay Zahilay, Jeanne Kohl-Welles, Dave Upthegrove, Joe McDermott, Claudia Balducci, Sarah Perry. Out in front is an image of Dow Constantine labeled: KC EXEC Dow I-love-death-jails Constantine. Below is: # No Stealth Jail Expansion and # Shut Down KCJ.

Another thing that reduces the size of a walkshed is being close to a highway—a situation that describes way too many of Sound Transit stations. This siting strategy (if you can call it that) systematically minimizes the possibility of living w/n walking distance of light rail

And remember, no one deserves to die in jail AND most people held in KC Jails have NOT been convicted of a crime; our county uses jail as a shabby and costly substitute for care, housing, and services. #ShutDownKCJ

90% of those in jail have not been convicted of a crime. They’re only locked inside because they cant afford to pay their bail. Instead of proposing solutions or reducing the jail population the KC Exec has proposed giving SCORE jail $3.5million to house 50 ppl. 2/

City after city in WA State is saying "We are full". Seattle has zoning that speaks loud & clear that 75% of the city thinks their neighborhood is "full". This selfish mindset impacts all of us. When we don't build new housing, people don't have housing & rents are too high.
