Curious... What was the first major news story you remember as a child?

Seeing so many saying 9/11.. The ‘93 blizzard was my first major news event but 9/11 is the most major of my childhood and truly my lifetime. Many know this but my father was in the WTC and escaped. I’ll never forget watching news footage while in a middle school classroom.

Honestly stunned at how large this thread has become. As both a journalist and lover of stories, there are *so* many incredible memories being shared here. Thank you all for sharing!

Assassination of JFK. As a toddler sitting on my grandmother’s lap at her house watching the black and white TV with rabbit ear antennas. I think it was Walter Cronkite on the tube.

Yes. Walter Cronkite struggling to remain composed was heartbreaking.

Baby Jessica trapped in the well. We got to eat dinner on TV trays in the living room for the first time because we couldn’t stop watching to see when she got pulled out by rescuers.

So this was a real thing? I thought the Simpsons episode was pure fiction.

I don't remember when Lincoln was shot. But I sure as hell remember the day they got Booth.

The Cuban Missile Crises, of 1962, when all planetary life was wiped off the planet. The only reason we still exist is we were funneled into an alternate timeline, where Kennedy, and Khrushchev, blinked, and had second thoughts. The world ended many times, since. Final, finally.
