I wanted to make my own magnetic gearbox for my unicycle, but I couldn't afford to buy the fifteen or so research papers at ~$20 each

Maybe the first portable ‘computer’ — the DYSEAC, operational April 1954; digital and programmable. I assume this has been posted on aggregators etc before, but I have something coming out about its architecture

If you've ever tried to test a stateful app in QuickCheck, Hedgehog or any other property-based testing library you'll know it can be seriously difficult! Check out this tutorial for a simple way to test stateful apps using Hedgehog.

This project is a great example of how Sybil attacks can be performed using large numbers of real devices. No reverse engineering of mobile apps nor programming nor hacking is required. Do the math on the cost of cheapest device you support and profit.

The distribution of daily avg temperatures for Miami-Dade County for last half of the 20th century (blue) and the last five years (pink). It's stunning. *ESPECIALLY* stunning given that all 365 days of each year in each period are included. (details & apologia downthread) 1/n

when someone uninstalls an app, there should be a dialog to see if they also want to delete the associated account. this feature would rule in any mobile os

Round trip property based tests like ( x == x) fail entirely when your format string is wrong: "%M/%d/%y %H:%M:%S" See how I accidentally put in capital M twice? that first one should be lowercase m! ARGH!

In related news, property based tests for time are easy to mess up. I mostly turned to randomly generated legal text and then checking (show . parse). Is there a better way?

Neat thing from today: newtype MyTime = MT { lt :: LocalTime } deriving FromJSON via (TimeStamp "%M/%d/%y %H:%M:%S") The rest of the required machinery means the first time is longer than writing a FromJSON by hand, but later custom instances are a single line!

Today's Haskell frustration: I want to parse "09/01/18 04:01:01" as September 1st 2018, what's the right to do that? Parse as LocalTime and add y2k? Something else entirely?
