Good morning. Today is the first day of the @NRA’s trial in bankruptcy court. For those of you who can’t wait, here are some disturbing excerpts from Wayne LaPierre’s deposition (filed over the weekend). #nrabankruptcytrial
LaPierre acknowledged being gifted - by a NRA *business* partner - use of a 100+ foot yacht with a full staff, for personal vacations in the Bahamas. He testified he used the yacht around once a year, and it included “two or three or four staff people,” as well as a cook.pic.twitter.com/9CGkz0FDE6
The yacht had “several staterooms” and a “jet boat.” LaPierre never offered to pay for the use of the yacht, nor did he disclose it on his conflict of interest form.pic.twitter.com/3BdGGwYFud
LaPierre claimed the use of the yacht was “offered as a security retreat where we could be safe and feel safe.” He grossly tried to link the Sandy Hook School shooting and his use of the yacht, saying he started using it as a secure location “the summer after” the mass shooting.pic.twitter.com/wwteF9twAx
The urgency of this purported security concern for LaPierre’s safety - which required him to set sail - is questionable considering that the Sandy Hook School shooting happened in December - six months before “the summer.”
And as if that’s not gross enough, LaPierre testified that his last stay on the yacht called “Illusion” was “sometime in 2018 after the Parkland shooting in the summer.” The mass shooting in Parkland happened in February - four months *before* the summer.pic.twitter.com/jELygkl9eP
LaPierre testified the yacht was “the one place I could feel safe, where I remember getting there going, Thank God I’m safe, nobody can get me here. That’s how it happened. That’s why I used it.” The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good friend with a yacht?pic.twitter.com/HvmGlbh6cR
LaPierre also testified that he participated in three or four “celebrity retreats” on the yacht the Illusion. These trips on the yacht were “most of them were in - in Europe, and I think one of them was to Greece,” he testified.
Seeming to undercut his claim that use of the yacht was for to keep him safe from bad guys, LaPierre testified that his Director of Security did not review safety or security on the yacht, nor did he conduct security checks on the other people who would be on the boat with him.pic.twitter.com/xDUOCu8F2S
This morning, beginning at 11:30 a.m., the NRA will face a six-day trial, marking the first time NRA executives — including CEO Wayne LaPierre and others — will be examined and cross-examined in open court relating to the financial scandals that have engulfed the organization.
Possible NRA witnesses may include LaPierre, a former Chief of Staff, General Counsel John Frazer (who said he wasn’t aware of the NRA’s bankruptcy until the day it was filed), and the CFO (who took the 5th so as “to not criminally implicate himself” at a recent deposition).
The Court will decide whether to dismiss the NRA’s bankruptcy for being filed in bad faith, appoint an examiner to investigate fraud/mismanagement, or appoint a trustee to run the NRA during bankruptcy (sidelining LaPierre). Every outcome leaves the NRA weak and in deep trouble.
