Admitting intellectual errors is hard no matter your IQ. It may be especially harder for extremely intelligent individuals such as these to admit error because they are so good at coming up with intellectual justifications for their original position.

This is absolutely true. The bigger problem, certainly for public figures, (which is a big problem for pols) and possibly even in academia, is that the average person sees admitting mistakes as a bad thing, it makes someone look worse, wrong, or worst of all, weak.
