As an empirical matter, an old, consolidated democracy has never turned into an autocracy, excepting cases of foreign war or occupation. There's a reason for that. It, quite literally, doesn't happen
In practice, this means that the burden is on the folks ignoring history to make the argument that something that has never happened will suddenly happen
Not true: Chile was a consolidated democracy before Pinochet.
There were numerous coups and attempted coups in the first half of the 20th century. And I can't recall the dates, but there was a period of authoritarian rule, I believe in the 1920s or 30s

I was going to say one of the original examples of a democratic republic famously went autocratic, to the point where modern autocracies model themselves stylistically on the Roman Empire today.
Would Rome qualify for this?

There's hardly enough statistical evidence on regimes and regime transitions to say that definitively. Not necessarily saying you're wrong, I don't have the evidence, but treating people's concerns as totally unfounded is irresponsible given the situation & environment we're in.
