Some of you have been asking for this, and now you have it. A spirited debate on Islam in , where I lay out my arguments in detail. And it managed to be civil and quite constructive, I think:

almost goes without saying but it's very clear from his book Obama doesn't give much thought to the left whatsoever

For people who don't care about things like human rights, democracy, or foundational principles of international law like the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by force, the Abraham Accords can seem really impressive.

Is liberal democracy dying? Has Trump been stopped, or has he been going from success to success? A very special simulcast with —don't miss it!

My hope is that in 20-25 years, we'll finally have a Democratic Party that cares about the freedom of Arabs and doesn't consign them to living under brutal "pro-American" regimes in the name of "stability." Unlikely? Well, it's something worth fighting for

Also, the relationships with Egypt, UAE, and Saudi are brittle because there are those of us who expect (or hope), perhaps against the odds, that there will one day be a Democratic Party that actually cares about democracy in the Middle East

Here, I lay out the counterfactual case that the failure of the Arab Spring wasn't inevitable. If the Obama administration had made two fundamentally different decisions in March 2011 and June 2013, the Middle East could have looked quite different today:

Our joint - episode is dropping at noon today, so check your podcast feeds then Here's a teaser where I argue that was right: a true autocrat would've used BLM protests and COVID to seize power. Trump largely disappeared:

The more I think about it, the more I'm not willing to take TIME's selection at face value. They're messing with us, and we shouldn't pretend that anyone would do this unironically. Credit where it's due, though, it's a strong meta move that's gone over most people's heads

nice episode + bonus on but I have to figure out how to set notifications so I know when & go live to join the crew. PS: many ways to open a bottle without an opener. Was it not meant to be, or was it just “what it is”?

This is a good episode (especially interesting if you have family and friends in other parts of the world and how they deal with COVID emergency). 1/2

To put it differently: Culture matters. Always. It's only a question of how much it matters
