A desire not to anger MBS also explains why other European countries failed to stand w/ Canada. We are now seeing the price of Europe and the US turning a blind eye to his actions. Yes, the US should retaliate but Europeans must reassess their own ties too. 3/3

3 days since I tweeted this, and the Saudis have shown just as little interest in countering the evidence they murdered Khashoggi as they did before. They're not even pretending to care about denying it. It's like they can't even be botheredhttps://twitter.com/shadihamid/status/1049842552944422912 …

It shows complete insensitivity to Arab grievances: Many Arabs in the region would see Pompeo's statement as confirming their worst fears: that Arabs and Palestinians have no value, and that, for the US, Israel is a just, righteous power, the very same power that represses them

I get how many see Pompeo's statement and, say, sure: Israel is the most successful country in the region (it is). I've said before that Israel is a "model" of a sustainable illiberal democracy. But that completely elides the reality of the occupation and Palestinian suffering

It's kinda nuts that a US secretary of state would say this, but I suppose these days it barely registers. Just like when Bolton said Palestine in scare quotes at a press briefinghttps://twitter.com/jdgreenblatt45/status/1050539359294906370 …
