GitHub pages (or Fastly on their behalf) is doing that redirection for me. Unfortunately, it doesn’t serve a cert for my apex, so I don’t think there’s anything I can do myself.

Dunno man. DNS can’t do SSL. If you want SSL redirection from apex you need the very hosted there. Have you heard about Heroku ACM?

Derek can also host the site on apex and www separately, with some git hook shenanigans. Or change the canonical host.
