after a barely substantial amount of deliberation i have decided that yes i will wear the sweatpants i slept in last night to the airport today and no there's nothing anyone can do to stop me

I think that whole concept came less from people actively dressing up, and more from the fact that you can't put a suit in a suitcase so typically you have to wear at least your sportcoat when you fly
