Actually there's zero introspection going on here. The error is caused by the generated code, not by Diesel explicitly doing anything. We just maintain proper source information in the generated tokens
Macros in Rust can't do introspection if they wanted to. The only information you have are the tokens you're given.
`#[derive(Debug)]`, etc receive the body of your struct as input. They can't see anything else about it. There's no way to ask questions like "does a type at this path exist" or "does this type implement this trait"
Doesn't necessarily have anything to do with runtime. Lints are able to ask both of those questions.
There are implementation concerns as well. If I have `#[derive(Foo, Bar)]` and I ask in `Foo` whether the type implements `Bar`, now the answer is dependent on whether `#[derive(Bar)]` ran first or not
