IIRC jQuery does squash commits on master for PRs, which feels like the best of both worlds: the main commit history is succinct, while the incremental commits can still be found on the original PR if they're important

IME only OSS devs put intention into their commits & messages, like @sgrif (& even then it's not usual or expected). Squash merges are much more scalable / human-friendly, while keeping the top-level history succinct for future devs.https://twitter.com/sgrif/status/959251340424654848 …

Don't get me wrong, I squash much more now. That commit was back when I had no clue if the project would live more than a few weeks
