TIL Android's move from JIT to AOT proved to be the wrong choice and they ended up putting a JIT back in again. When will people learn?

I can find no documents to indicate that Android's ART-based JIT (in Nougat) does anything more than lazily compile hot methods rather that eagerly compiling everything AOT. Is that all its "profiled optimization" does?

I found this podcast about new optimizations in Android's ART JIT. Up until Oreo (late 2017), there was very little profile-guided optimization; mostly a lazy AOT. Now they do profile-guided inlining. If only we'd had profiling JVMs ten years ago! /s
