The FizzBuzz thing *is* weird. I interviewed people at Palm, NVidia and other great companies using C, and 50% of people with good resumes couldn't code at all. Seriously, not at *all*. In Ruby-land, that hasn't been true when I interview.

But I've often wondered whether the FizzBuzz phenomenon was a stress or anxiety response.

That *could* explain why it might happen more often at larger (and more anxiety-inducing) companies. It doesn't seem to explain how these candidates manage to show up at the interview with their shoes tied and their clothes on -- but stress and anxiety are pretty weird things.

It might be. But even really trivial problems seemed to just be too much. Like, FizzBuzz is often the *right* test for that :-/ Presumably even stress or anxiety wouldn't have that effect, at least on that number of people.

I’ve failed a fizzbuzz test.

Any insight about why/how that happened?

100% nerves. I get irrationally nervous when you put me at a whiteboard.

Any suggestions on how an interviewer can help get the person past nerves so they can be fairly evaluated? I try to be welcoming and helpful but some are still nervous.

Don’t whiteboard interviewees. Use something else instead. If you must have them write Code, have it be on their computer with their preferred toolset.

Obviously you make them write UML diagrams instead.
