Ah, I see. I've filed an issue to make that configurable.
Also this is not something I've looked into for anything yet -- Does thermite ship an extconf.rb by default?

No, you add the Rakefile to the gemspec.extensions list. I got a bit frustrated trying to deal with extconf.rb in the beginning of Thermite development and switched to Rakefiles.
