I ended up needing a lot of things that are only exposed as C macros though, which would be basically impossible without https://github.com/tildeio/helix/blob/master/ruby/ext/helix_runtime/native/helix_runtime.c … (I've been meaning to open a PR to Ruby switching to linkable symbols for most of them)

That's fair. I had to PR Ruru to add those macros and I felt dirty doing it.

The vast majority of these have no reason to be macros. (other than predating `static` and `inline`). I suspect a PR would be accepted. Now we just have to drop support for all versions earlier than 2.6 :trollface:
