Oh I agree, I just think it's ridiculous (and actively harmful) to have a `char` type that is a UTF-16 code unit.

Totally. 90s platforms got bait-and-switched when Unicode was like “oops we need more than 16 bits”. Win32 and NSString have same problem

Java is in the same boat too, char is a code unit not code point or grapheme, basically useless
