I’m trying to phase “remote work” out of my vocabulary. “Remote” implies some work is “local.” A distributed team means nobody is “remote”.

can't people be remote, but not distributed? e.g. everyone is in the same TZ

Depends on what you mean by distribution. To me, time zone doesn’t enter into it. e.g.: 5 devs working on a project in git from the same TZ.

Remote can refer to an individual being separated from a central location. Distributed implicates the group by definition.
