If your tests pass without vcr why would you need to use it? Or is this sarcasm and @sgrif basically means "never use it"? 
Rate limiting, making tests faster, being able to run your tests on a plane
Ah thank you both. I might use it for Stripe but noticed Thoughbot *seem* to favour fakes. Planes aside, any problems for VCR + Stripe?
Stripe isn't an API that you can reset between tests, and you specifically care about the requests being made
So to clarify vcr is problematic because you have to hit the api at least once? (and again when cassettes are deleted - hence orig.point)
More important is that it hides what you're testing. You're hitting the API *for* the side effects. Tests should reflect that.
Thanks! I kind of understand though 135 char limit makes this difficult. I'd love to hear you explain more re: vcr (& stripe) on podcast.
