sizeof("foo") returns 4, which seems right (3 chars + 1 null)

Sizeof("foo") is randomly right. Sizeof("bigger than foo") is also 4. And sizeof("b").

Turns out `sizeof("foo")` is the same as `strlen("foo") + 1`. A pointer is 8 bytes not 4

Hm. But setting gcc standards mode as far back as c90 doesn't change the behavior. Okay, I'm just wrong.

A more reasonable explanation is that you have shifted from an alternate reality where that was true.
