it's funny because if you followed industry good pracitce in C programming, then Rust has practically has zero learning curve.

Most super experienced C++ devs have this feedback IME. They don't find the borrow checker hard to learn at all.

This doesn't mean they don't have friction, just not the friction you'd expect. And most push through, it's the normal new-language friction
