      I think my point is that writing an explicit rescue for something which has a non-raising equivalent is smelly.

      What is the non-raising equivalent though? (keeping in mind that you usually want a 404 not a 500)

          we don't really do maybe-monads in Ruby but I think it's a sensical way to solve the problem too.
