When writing a conditional in a superclass, extract each branch to it's own private method - much easier to override in subclasses
Working heavily in a language without inheritance gives me weird feelings about this advice (intended as less cheeky than it sounds)

As a general rule of thumb, I try to avoid inheritance in favor of alternatives like composition.
