What about cases where it's not a can/can't? e.g. "You can get by with just ActiveRecord, but it'll help to learn SQL"
Even with a solid abstraction, I think it's often beneficial to understand the next layer down.

right. Acknowledging the abstraction is leaky vs. asserting that because it's leaky, you must know everything underneath it.
