In Java 8, interfaces can have "default implementations"... is there even a difference anymore between interfaces and abstract classes?

Only superficially, I periodically get huffy and advocate for their unification, too.

Well, "only" is probably a stronger word than is merited. Perhaps "there is an artificially introduced difference" would be better.
