      @dhh @unclebobmartin I've always felt that self-testing code is the most valuable outcome of TDD. I often find design aspect useful too.

      @martinfowler @unclebobmartin Main contortions I see in the Rails world are around trying to isolate controller tests and prevent DB access.

      @dhh @martinfowler @unclebobmartin Do you think the issue there is just trying to isolate library code? Never stub code you don't own

      @sgrif @martinfowler @unclebobmartin It's funny, I do the OPPOSITE. Only mock/stub code I don't control.

      @dhh @martinfowler @unclebobmartin Interesting. Could you elaborate? Are you referring to third party services?

      @sgrif @martinfowler @unclebobmartin Third-party services, standard lib (like Date), and other gems.

      @dhh If the point of some code is to interact with the database, using a stub instead of a real relation is absurd.

      @sgrif I contend that point of an Active Record is to be backed by a DB. If you're stubbing ARs or making repos, you're imo harming design.

      @dhh Same goes for controllers in my opinion. Outermost level of the application is not meant to be tested in isolation.

      @sgrif Most certainly, which is where the command pattern and the hexagon approach both go astray in my book.

      @dhh I think its a question of where things belong. Sending an email should stay at he controller level. Orchestrating 6 models maybe not.

          @sgrif Right. My underlying point is that bad code doesn't necessarily improve through TDD or patterns. Rewrite it. Write it better.

          @dhh The benefit of breaking out classes or methods is that it forces you to give a name to a concept -- Too many people skip that step.
