On the gameboy most games have a memory bank controller. Rather than having one byte of memory mapped I/O to control it, you set RAM vs ROM mode by trying to write to one section of ROM and select a bank by writing to another section of ROM. The MBC intercepts the page fault

fun fact: I keep considering writing a physical and virtual memory emulator in JS for "demonstration purposes" like you could quite easily do something in JS to generate "structs" whose get/setters delegate to reading out of a UInt8Array

like a really basic memory layout thing so that if a JS-native object knows its address, and the types of its fields, you can translate that to a memory location in your emulator and transparently make objects hosted in your own virtual memory
