Are phones handheld game consoles?

I'm curious if the answers to this would have been different if asked back before ads and/or microtransactions were the norm and every game cost $2-$5

I suppose that's a reasonable definition. What I find interesting about the answers to this + the switch is that apparently a lot of people think that a list of "Best selling handheld games" should include Breath of the Wild but not Angry Birds

Once CPUs got small/cheap enough that we could have handhelds emulate consoles from not that long ago, the blur was inevitable IMO. Hell the Vita was even capable of playing a lot of *current* generation console games at the time

To me one of the big differences for handheld consoles was always the lower price of games, which would put phones more in that category than the switch. But I'm certainly not going to claim the switch isn't a handheld console
