Can't tell if you're joking or being serious, and if you're being serious I don't understand :)

Folks have been suggesting replacements for master as a primary branch name. For open source projects, `prerelease` seems like an excellent description of that branch

Oh, I think it should be left as it is and people changing from master will be a PITA. I already have one client using "develop" as the main branch name, and it's very very annoying.

"develop" makes sense to me, too. The issue is muscle memory? I honestly don't understand why git chose "master" in the first place. Why not "main" or "trunk" or hell, even "a" (like "foo", but starts a sequence of more than 3)

I guess master is like the master disk, or gold master release. trunk or main would have worked too. develop doesn't to me feel like the right word. The issue is the difference, it's a complete PITA switching between peronal/clientA/clientB repos…

I regularly type/nearly type "master" in the repo that uses develop (the also have a master branch that's for deploys). I see nothing wrong with master, and would just prefer consistency.

FWIW, I don't understand why those things use the word "master", either. If there's some way master/slave makes sense as a metaphor, I don't understand it. Like it doesn't help me understand anything.

It's probably from many of the definitions sense of "authority". A gold master is the one true disc from which others are created, if you have a record, it will be authored ultimately from this one source.

Intended meaning doesn't matter if it's not received that way

I don't believe that master as a branch name is a problem in any way.
