IMO the existence of the internet makes gaming worse in general. Pokemon's probably a perfect example of this. It used to be rumors of how to get items/Pokemon were spread through communities, and trading was a social event. None of that is true anymore
Or I guess it's more specifically the combination of the internet with folks tendencies to hyper-optimize everything. I think World of Warcraft is another good example. There was a time where it was a vast world of mystery, now everything is datamined weeks before release
