Basically, I'm being passed a reference, and I want to clone the reference to pass it into a function that consumes it. Do I need to implement copy in this case?

It didn't compile without the *'s either, turns out, I needed to derive Clone
Oh yeah I assumed that was in your real code since your example had a lot of other unrelated errors
