Yeah, I was going to do that too, but ended up just getting the whole lot in the end.
Can't blame you. I ordered the controller a few days ago, so it'll just be the vive base stations (I can't see any reason to upgrade those)

I heard rumours that the tracking was minutely better, that they were quieter and that was enough :) Also, this way I can donate my full Vive kit to someone else.
