Concrete example that is much less controversial: If a method name or variable name is so long that you cannot do anything to get under the line budget, give up and print a loud warning that you're giving up on this line

I agree. All formatters have opinions, and I think it's natural to extend that to edge cases like this.

A warning would be OK, as long as "give up" just means leave the line long. Sometimes a surprisingly-long name is helpful in expressing intent. I think ignoring warnings in a formatter is OK, even though I think almost all warnings in compilers should be treated as errors.
