How do we feel about giant companies that are allowing people to attend conferences, but only if the people pay for it themselves? Is that Coronavirus mitigation or is it opportunistically trying to save money?
I think a much more proactive way to help employees would be to say "If you paid for a conference ticket or hotel/travel that you cannot get refunded, and want to skip due to COVID-19, we will cover that cost if you do not attend"

Yes, I think this is exactly the kind of response I would expect and think is good. Let people opt out if they want to, make sure to protect your employees from unexpected costs, let people fill preexisting commitments when compliant with public health recommendations
